Bulgaria is one of the cheaper countries in Europe to visit and one of the cheaper ones to buy travel data for. It is also more mountainous than most people expect — roughly a third of the country is upland — and that is where the coverage story is.
Where Bulgarian coverage breaks down
Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas are well covered, as is the Black Sea coastal strip where most summer visitors go. Sunny Beach, Golden Sands and Nessebar are resort infrastructure and the networks reflect that.
The ski resorts are covered around the base areas and the main runs — Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo all have usable signal where the lifts are. Go beyond that into the Rila, Pirin or Rhodope ranges and it stops. These are serious mountains with genuine wilderness in them, and the hiking routes between the mountain huts are not places to rely on a live map.
The road between the coast and the interior is the other thing worth knowing. Bulgarian secondary roads through the mountains are slow and the signal along them is intermittent, which is a poor combination if you are navigating to somewhere you have never been.

Live prices in GBP, updated from our network partners. 6 plans currently available for Bulgaria. Validity counts from the moment the eSIM first connects to a network in Bulgaria, not from when you buy — so installing days before you fly costs you nothing.
£1.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £13.99 is £0.70 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.
Roaming, and whether you need this at all
Bulgaria is in the EU, so an EU or EEA SIM roams here at home rates. Everyone else — UK, US, Canada, Australia, Gulf — is on standard international roaming, which for a country where a week of travel data costs a couple of pounds makes an eSIM an easy decision.
Cyrillic, and why it increases your data use
Bulgarian is written in Cyrillic, and outside the main tourist areas signage, menus and transport timetables often are not duplicated in Latin script. Visitors lean on live translation far more here than in Western Europe — camera translation of a menu or a bus timetable is a genuinely common use of data on a Bulgarian trip in a way it simply is not in Ireland.
It is not a large amount of data per lookup, but it is constant, and it is a reason not to buy the smallest plan if you are travelling beyond the resorts. Downloading the offline language pack before you fly costs you nothing and removes the dependency entirely.
The networks you actually connect to
In Bulgaria our plans roam onto A1 (4G), Vivacom (4G), Telenor (4G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built.
It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Bulgaria than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.
Before you buy
Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.
Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.
