eSIM guide for Australian travellers

Updated 1 October 2026 · 8 min read

Australian trips tend to be long — long flights, long stays, and often several countries in one run. That is exactly the shape of trip where per-day roaming adds up fastest and where installing your eSIM before you leave matters most. Here is what to look for and what it costs in Australian dollars.

Day passes and long trips

Australian carriers sell international roaming as a daily pass, usually with a set data allowance per day and a list of included countries. Destinations outside that list are charged at a far higher rate, which is the part that catches people out on multi-country trips.

Because Australian holidays are rarely short, the per-day structure compounds. Three weeks through Indonesia and Singapore is three weeks of daily charges, on every line travelling.

One more thing specific to flying out of Australia: install the eSIM before you board. On a long-haul route you may land somewhere with no free airport Wi-Fi, and a profile needs an internet connection to download. Validity does not start until the eSIM first connects in the destination, so installing days early costs you nothing.

What to actually look for in a travel eSIM

Most travel eSIM sites compete on adjectives. Four things are worth checking instead, and all four are answerable from a plan page before you buy:

  1. A number, not the word "unlimited". Almost every unlimited mobile plan carries a fair-use threshold past which you are throttled to a speed you would not choose to browse on. An "unlimited" plan with a 5 GB cap is a 5 GB plan that does not say so on the price tag. Ours show the number — the reasoning is in fixed data or unlimited.
  2. The price per gigabyte, not the headline price. The cheapest plan is almost never the best value. In Indonesia, the entry plan works out at A$3.99 per GB while the best-value plan is A$1.45 per GB — about 22% less for every gigabyte you use.
  3. Whether your handset can actually take it. The most expensive eSIM is one that will not install. Thirty seconds with *#06# settles it.
  4. Which networks it roams onto. A travel eSIM is not its own network — it uses local ones. In Indonesia, for instance, that means Smartfren, Telkomsel, XL, Indosat, PT Natrindo Telepon Seluler, Fren/Hepi — the same commercial networks local customers use, not a separate tourist band. We publish the operator list on every destination page.

Charged in AUD. No activation fee, no delivery charge, no card surcharge and no auto-renewal — when the data is used up, the plan stops.

Will your phone work?

Yes for any reasonably recent handset — iPhone XR and XS onward, Pixel 3 and later, Galaxy S20 and later, and most recent mid-range Androids. Australian iPhones keep their physical SIM tray, so your Australian number stays live alongside the eSIM.

Confirm with *#06#: an EID next to the IMEI means the hardware is present. Setup differs by brand and is covered in our device compatibility guide.

If you are travelling with family, remember that each phone needs its own plan — an eSIM covers one device. Tethering from one phone to others is allowed and is often the cheaper way to cover a group.

Why our pricing is worth comparing

Not a claim to be the cheapest — prices move, and anyone who tells you they are permanently the lowest is guessing. What we will put in writing are the policies, because those are checkable:

  • Every plan states its data allowance as a number. No unlimited tier, so no fair-use threshold to discover mid-trip.
  • The price on the plan is the amount charged. No activation fee, no delivery charge, no card surcharge, no auto-renewal.
  • Charged in AUD. The figure at checkout is what leaves your account — not a dollar price converted afterwards by your bank at a rate you find out later.
  • Cost per gigabyte is published on every destination page, next to the headline price, so the comparison above is one you can make yourself rather than take on trust.
  • The operator list is published too. You can see which local networks a plan roams onto before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Indonesia plans are in the catalogue and roam onto the local networks. Bali is the single most-visited destination for Australian travellers, and it is one of the cheaper ones on our list.
Yes. The profile needs internet to download, and validity only starts when it first connects in the destination — so installing at home costs you nothing and avoids relying on airport Wi-Fi after a long flight.
Only with a regional plan. A country plan covers one country; for a multi-country trip compare a regional package against separate local plans.

Buying takes about two minutes

Pick a destination, pay by card, and the QR code plus activation details appear on your order page and by email within minutes. Install before you fly — validity only starts when the eSIM first connects in the destination, so buying early costs nothing. What happens after you pay walks through the whole process.
