You need data before you leave the airport
Grab in most of the region, Gojek in Indonesia — getting from the airport to your accommodation is an app, and the app needs a connection you do not yet have. That is the moment a travel eSIM earns its money, and it is the moment you do not want to be installing a new country profile for the fourth time this month.
Install one regional profile before you fly and it simply keeps working as you cross borders.
What the coverage is actually like
Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta are well covered. Singapore is effectively complete, MRT included. The gaps are predictable and geographic rather than national: ferry crossings between Thai and Indonesian islands, the Vietnamese northern mountains around Ha Giang and Sapa, the Laotian interior, and the smaller Philippine islands.
None of that is fixable by any provider — you roam onto the local networks and get exactly what they have.
Regional plan or country plan?
From two countries upward this is the cheaper option, and the entry price here is among the lowest of any region we sell. A single-country trip to Thailand or Vietnam is still better served by the country plan.
The arithmetic is simple enough to do yourself: add up what the individual country plans would cost for the countries you are actually visiting, and compare. Our full price list has every country we sell, and local or regional eSIM works through the trade-off in more detail.
Before you buy
Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked — dial *#06# and look for an EID beside the IMEI. No EID means no eSIM hardware, and a locked phone will install the profile then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.
Install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.
