Buying an eSIM online: what happens between paying and having data
Buying a travel eSIM online takes about two minutes. The part people are unsure about is what happens in the minutes after — whether anything arrives, what it looks like, and what to do if the phone does not immediately show data. This walks through the whole thing, including the bits that look like faults and are not.
What you are actually buying
Not a physical object, and not really a "SIM" in the sense of a chip. You are buying a profile: a small encrypted file that tells your phone's built-in eSIM chip how to register on a network in another country. It is delivered as a QR code, or as a pair of text values you can type in by hand.
Because nothing is shipped, there is no delivery window, no address and no customs. There is also nothing to lose at the airport.
The purchase, step by step
- Pick the destination. One country if you are going to one country; a regional plan if you are crossing borders. Regional starts at £1.49 and country plans at £1.49.
- Pick the size. Each plan shows its data, its validity and its price, with no variant hidden behind a second click.
- Sign in or create an account. This exists so your eSIM is retrievable later — from another device, after clearing your inbox, or from the app. A purchase with nowhere to come back to is a purchase you can lose.
- Pay by card. Card details go straight to Stripe and are never held by us. If you have a code — VENTURE10 or ACTIVE10 — enter it before paying; each takes 10% off.
What arrives, and how fast
Usually within a minute or two of the payment clearing, sometimes a few minutes longer if the provider is busy. Two things land at once:
- Your order page, which shows the QR code plus the SM-DP+ address and activation code underneath it.
- An email with the same details.
The order stays in your account permanently, so the email is a convenience rather than the only copy. If you close the tab, sign in and open Orders.
Those two text values under the QR code matter more than they look. If you are buying on the phone that will use the eSIM, you cannot scan your own screen — you type the SM-DP+ address and activation code into the phone's Add eSIM screen instead. That is the normal path for a single-phone traveller, not a workaround.
Install now, travel later
Install the profile while you are still at home on Wi-Fi. This is the single most useful habit with travel eSIMs, and it costs nothing: validity counts from the moment the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination, not from when you bought or installed it.
So a 30-day plan installed a week before departure is still a full 30 days when you land. What you avoid is the scenario where you arrive, have no data, and need data in order to download the profile that would give you data.
The steps differ by handset — the menu is in a different place on iPhone, Samsung, Pixel and Huawei. Device compatibility has each one.
Landing: what should happen
Turn the phone off airplane mode. Within a minute or two the travel line should register on a local network and show data. Before that point, nothing happening is expected, not broken — most travel plans will not attach to any network outside the destination country.
If there is still no data after a few minutes, it is nearly always one of these:
- Data roaming is off on the travel line. The travel eSIM is a foreign profile roaming onto a local network. It needs roaming enabled — on that line only. Your home line stays off.
- The phone is still using your home SIM for data. Installing the eSIM does not select it; you have to set it as the data line.
- The handset is carrier-locked. The profile installs and then will not register. Only your home network can fix this, and it is worth checking before you fly.
Is buying an eSIM online safe?
The two real questions are who holds your card details and what happens if the eSIM does not work.
Card details go directly to Stripe. We never see or store a card number. The activation details themselves are tied to your account, so someone reading your email cannot install your eSIM without also being signed in as you — though as with any QR code, do not post a screenshot of it publicly, because an unused activation code is usable by whoever has it.
On the second question: if a profile genuinely fails to install or register, contact support with your phone model, destination and order email. An activation code can normally only be used once, which is why it is worth getting the install right rather than deleting and retrying.
