Switzerland is the single most common roaming mistake in Europe. It sits in the middle of the EU geographically, people drive through it without thinking, and it is in neither the EU nor the EEA — which means roam-like-at-home does not apply and standard roaming rates do. The bills that result are the reason this page exists.
Excellent coverage for a mountain country
Swiss coverage is genuinely impressive given the terrain. Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Basel and Lucerne are dense, and the rail network — which is how most visitors travel — holds a signal along most routes including many tunnels. The Glacier Express and Bernina routes are covered for much of their length.
The mountains are better than you would expect. Major resort areas, the lift infrastructure at Zermatt, Verbier, St Moritz and the Jungfrau region, and the main valley roads all have usable signal. It is the high Alpine terrain away from infrastructure — the glacier routes, the high passes in winter, the hut-to-hut traverses — where it stops.
The long road and rail tunnels are the routine interruption. The Gotthard in particular is long enough to matter.

Live prices in GBP, updated from our network partners. 6 plans currently available for Switzerland. Validity counts from the moment the eSIM first connects to a network in Switzerland, not from when you buy — so installing days before you fly costs you nothing.
£1.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £11.99 is £0.60 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.
Roaming, and whether you need this at all
This is the important part. Switzerland is not in the EU and not in the EEA, so EU roam-like-at-home does not cover it. An EU SIM that roams free across the rest of the continent will be charged Swiss roaming rates here, and UK and non-European SIMs likewise. Many European regional eSIM plans also exclude Switzerland or price it separately for the same reason. If you are driving from France to Italy through Switzerland, or taking a Swiss leg of a wider rail trip, check that your plan actually includes it.
Border towns will catch you out
Geneva airport sits on the French border. Basel has German and French suburbs. Lugano is minutes from Italy. In all these places a phone can register on whichever network is strongest, and the Swiss–EU boundary is precisely where that matters most — in either direction.
If your trip crosses the border repeatedly, the honest answer is a plan that covers both sides rather than one that covers one and surprises you about the other. And if you are only passing through Switzerland on the way somewhere else, it is still a country your phone will connect to, and still one your European plan may not include.
The networks you actually connect to
In Switzerland our plans roam onto Sunrise (5G), Salt (5G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.
It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Switzerland than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.
Before you buy
Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.
Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.
