Cheapest eSIM for Austria: prices, and what the Alps do to your signal
Short answer: The cheapest eSIM for Austria is £1.49 for 1 GB over 7 days. 6 plans run up to 20 GB at £11.99, and the best value per gigabyte is £0.60. All of them roam onto 3 and A1.net.

Austria is two connectivity problems in one country. Vienna, Salzburg and the motorway network are straightforward. The moment you go up a valley — which is most of why people visit — the picture changes, and it changes in ways a price comparison will not tell you about.
Valleys, passes and the ÖBB
Austrian mobile coverage follows the valley floors, because that is where the towns, the roads and the railways are. Stand in Innsbruck or Zell am See and you will have a strong signal. Drive up a side valley toward a trailhead and it will fall away within a few kilometres, not because the network is poor but because there is a mountain between you and it.
Ski areas are the exception people get wrong in both directions. The lift stations and the main pistes at large resorts are usually covered — operators have an obvious interest in that. The back bowls, the ski routes and anything off the marked network frequently are not. The long road tunnels are dead by default unless they have been fitted with repeaters, and the Arlberg, Tauern and Katschberg are long enough that you will notice.
ÖBB rail is better than the roads. The Westbahn corridor between Vienna and Salzburg holds a signal almost throughout. The scenic lines — the Semmering, the Mariazellerbahn, the Arlberg route — are scenic for the same reason they drop out.

Live prices in GBP, updated from our network partners. 6 plans currently available for Austria. Validity counts from the moment the eSIM first connects to a network in Austria, not from when you buy — so installing days before you fly costs you nothing.
£1.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £11.99 is £0.60 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.
Roaming, and whether you need this at all
Austria is in the EU, so if your normal SIM is from another EU or EEA country, roam-like-at-home already covers you and a travel eSIM is only worth it if your home allowance is small. If your SIM is British, American, Canadian, Australian or from anywhere else outside the EEA, you have no such protection and standard roaming rates apply.
Two practical notes
Austria borders eight countries and the mountain border regions are exactly where a phone will latch onto a German, Italian, Swiss or Czech tower across the ridge. An Austria-only plan will not carry you there — if your trip genuinely crosses borders, a regional Europe plan is the right purchase, and Switzerland in particular is not in the EU and is priced separately everywhere.
Second: download the offline map before you drive into the mountains, not when you notice the signal has gone. By then you are usually in the place where it is not coming back.
The networks you actually connect to
In Austria our plans roam onto 3 (5G), A1.net (5G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.
It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Austria than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.
Before you buy
Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.
Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.
