Best eSIM for German travellers going outside the EU
Germany is one of the biggest outbound travel markets in the world, and a large share of it goes exactly where EU roaming does not reach: Turkey, Egypt, Thailand, the Emirates. Inside the EU your Telekom, Vodafone or O2 plan already covers you and you can stop reading. This guide is about the rest.

Where your German plan stops working cheaply
Telekom, Vodafone and O2 all have to let you use your German allowance across the EU and EEA at no extra charge — that is EU law, not a tariff feature, and it has held since 2017. For Mallorca, Vienna or Amsterdam you need nothing from us, and we would rather say so.
The problem is that German holiday patterns do not stop at the EEA border. Turkey and Egypt are two of the most-booked package destinations from Germany, and neither is in the EEA. Nor is Thailand, nor the Emirates, nor the United States. The moment you land in any of them your tariff reverts to standard international roaming, priced per megabyte or per day at rates set by your operator rather than by Brussels.
Antalya is the clearest example. It is a short flight, it feels like a European beach holiday, and it is priced like long-haul roaming. A Turkey eSIM removes that entirely.
The United Kingdom is the other common surprise. It left the EU and left Roam Like At Home with it, so a few days in London now carries the same roaming treatment as anywhere else outside the bloc.
What to actually look for in a travel eSIM
Most travel eSIM sites compete on adjectives. Four things are worth checking instead, and all four are answerable from a plan page before you buy:
- A number, not the word "unlimited". Almost every unlimited mobile plan carries a fair-use threshold past which you are throttled to a speed you would not choose to browse on. An "unlimited" plan with a 5 GB cap is a 5 GB plan that does not say so on the price tag. Ours show the number — the reasoning is in fixed data or unlimited.
- The price per gigabyte, not the headline price. The cheapest plan is almost never the best value. In Turkey, the entry plan works out at €1.99 per GB while the best-value plan is €0.80 per GB — about 45% less for every gigabyte you use.
- Whether your handset can actually take it. The most expensive eSIM is one that will not install. Thirty seconds with *#06# settles it.
- Which networks it roams onto. A travel eSIM is not its own network — it uses local ones. In Turkey, for instance, that means Vodafone, Avea/Türk Telekom — the same commercial networks local customers use, not a separate tourist band. We publish the operator list on every destination page.
What it costs for the places German travellers actually go
Live prices in EUR, pulled from the catalogue when this page was built. The last column is the best cost per gigabyte available for that destination — which is usually not the cheapest plan.

Will your German phone work?
Almost certainly. Handsets sold in Germany from roughly 2019 onward support eSIM — iPhone XR and XS (2018) onward, Pixel 3 and later, Galaxy S20 and later, plus most recent mid-range Androids. German iPhones keep their SIM tray, so your German SIM stays in for calls and SMS while the eSIM carries data.
One point specific to Germany: a Prepaid-Karte from a discounter (Aldi Talk, congstar, Blau and similar) is a tariff, not a different kind of phone — the handset's eSIM support is unaffected, and a travel eSIM installs alongside it exactly as it would next to a Telekom contract.
Confirm in thirty seconds: dial *#06#. An EID next to the IMEI means the hardware is there. Setup per brand is in our device compatibility guide.
A note on package holidays
If you booked a Pauschalreise, check what the hotel Wi-Fi actually covers before assuming you can rely on it. Resort Wi-Fi is usually fine in the lobby and unreliable at the beach, and it does nothing for you in a taxi from the airport — which is precisely when you need a map and a translation app.
A 5 GB plan covers two weeks of maps, messaging and ordinary browsing for most people without having to ration anything. If you are posting video daily, size up.
Why our pricing is worth comparing
Not a claim to be the cheapest — prices move, and anyone who tells you they are permanently the lowest is guessing. What we will put in writing are the policies, because those are checkable:
- Every plan states its data allowance as a number. No unlimited tier, so no fair-use threshold to discover mid-trip.
- The price on the plan is the amount charged. No activation fee, no delivery charge, no card surcharge, no auto-renewal.
- Charged in EUR. The figure at checkout is what leaves your account — not a dollar price converted afterwards by your bank at a rate you find out later.
- Cost per gigabyte is published on every destination page, next to the headline price, so the comparison above is one you can make yourself rather than take on trust.
- The operator list is published too. You can see which local networks a plan roams onto before buying.

Frequently asked questions
Buying takes about two minutes
Pick a destination, pay by card, and the QR code plus activation details appear on your order page and by email within minutes. Install before you fly — validity only starts when the eSIM first connects in the destination, so buying early costs nothing. What happens after you pay walks through the whole process.
