Cheapest eSIM for Croatia: the coast, the islands and the ferry dead zones

Published 11 October 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: The cheapest eSIM for Croatia is £1.49 for 1 GB over 7 days. 6 plans run up to 20 GB at £13.99, and the best value per gigabyte is £0.70. All of them roam onto Tele2 and A1.

Croatia has over a thousand islands and the ones people visit are reached by ferry. That single fact shapes what a travel eSIM is worth here, because the ferries are where the signal goes and the ferry timetable is the thing you most need to look up.

The Dalmatian coast is covered; the water between it is not

Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar and the coastal road are well covered, and the major islands — Hvar, Brač, Korčula, Krk — have good signal in the towns and along the main roads. Coverage on the islands is better than visitors expect.

The crossings are the gap. On the longer Jadrolinija routes the signal degrades as you leave the coast and can disappear entirely in the middle of a crossing before picking up as you approach the far island. The catamarans are fast enough that it is a brief inconvenience; the car ferries are not.

Inland is the other half of the country and a different experience. Plitvice and the Krka national parks have coverage at the entrances and visitor centres and patchy-to-none on the trail networks. The Velebit range and the inland route between Zagreb and the coast have genuine gaps.

Coverage in short: The Dalmatian coast and islands are well covered, which is where most visitors go. The inland mountains and the Plitvice area can drop out.

£1.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £13.99 is £0.70 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.

Roaming, and whether you need this at all

Croatia is in the EU and has used the euro since 2023, so an EU or EEA SIM roams at home rates and there is no currency conversion to think about either. A UK, US, Australian or other non-EEA SIM gets neither benefit and will be charged standard roaming.

Book the ferry before you lose the signal

The practical rule for a Croatian island trip is to do your looking-up on land. Ferry timetables change seasonally and sailings are cancelled for weather — the bura wind in particular — and the moment you want to check an alternative is usually the moment you are mid-crossing with no signal.

Screenshot the timetable, download the offline map of the island before you board, and treat the crossing as offline time. Nothing about a travel eSIM changes this: the local networks have the same gap, and a local SIM would behave identically.

The networks you actually connect to

In Croatia our plans roam onto Tele2 (5G), A1 (4G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.

It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Croatia than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.

Before you buy

Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.

Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.

For how Croatia compares with the rest of what we sell, see what travel eSIMs actually cost, or how much data you actually need if the size is the part you are unsure about.

Frequently asked questions

Near the coast and approaching the islands, yes. In the middle of a longer crossing, often not — the signal degrades as you leave land and returns as you approach the far side. Check timetables and download maps before you board rather than during the crossing.
Better than most visitors expect. Hvar, Brač, Korčula and Krk have solid coverage in the towns and along the main roads. It is the water in between, and the remoter parts of the larger islands, where it drops.

Tele2 (5G), A1 (4G). These are the commercial networks local customers use, not a separate visitor band, so your coverage is theirs. 5G is available where the network has deployed it and your handset supports it.
