Short answer: The cheapest eSIM for Hungary is £1.49 for 1 GB over 7 days. 6 plans run up to 20 GB at £11.99, and the best value per gigabyte is £0.60. All of them roam onto Telenor Hungary and Vodafone.

Hungary is a cheap country to buy travel data for and an easy one to stay connected in if you stay where most visitors go. Budapest is thoroughly covered, the motorways are fine, and the gaps are out on the plain and along the eastern border where comparatively few trips take you.

The city, the lake and the flat east

Budapest has dense coverage including the metro — the M1 is the oldest underground line in continental Europe and it still has a signal on it. The thermal baths, the castle district, the ruin bars and the whole of Pest are a non-issue.

Lake Balaton is the summer destination and the developed northern and southern shores are well covered. The Tihany peninsula and the hills behind the northern shore are slightly thinner but usable.

The Great Plain — the Alföld — and the far east toward the Romanian and Ukrainian borders are where coverage genuinely drops. These are sparsely populated agricultural areas and the network follows the population. Hortobágy national park in particular is somewhere to arrive with the map already downloaded.

Coverage in short: Budapest and the motorway network are well covered. The Great Plain and the far east are thinner.

£1.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £11.99 is £0.60 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.

Roaming, and whether you need this at all

Hungary is in the EU, so EU and EEA SIMs roam at home rates. Hungary uses the forint rather than the euro, which again has no bearing on the data but does mean that the prices here in sterling are the figures to compare against.

Budapest transport and the bath queues

Hungarian public transport ticketing has moved substantially onto apps and machines, and the Budapest transport app is one of the things a visitor will actually open repeatedly. Likewise the popular thermal baths publish live-ish occupancy and ticketing information online, and checking before you walk across the city is a genuinely useful thing to be able to do.

None of this is heavy. A Budapest city break is one of the lighter data loads in Europe, and the entry plan covers it comfortably for a few days.

The networks you actually connect to

In Hungary our plans roam onto Telenor Hungary (5G), Vodafone (5G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.

It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Hungary than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.

Before you buy

Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.

Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.

For how Hungary compares with the rest of what we sell, see what travel eSIMs actually cost, or how much data you actually need if the size is the part you are unsure about.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, including the historic M1 line. Budapest has dense urban coverage and the underground network is included, so transport apps and messaging work below ground.
The Great Plain and the far eastern border regions. These are sparsely populated and the network follows the population — Hortobágy national park in particular is somewhere to have your offline map downloaded before you arrive.
£1.49 for 1 GB over 7 days — the lowest of the 6 Hungary plans we sell. The best value per gigabyte is the 20 GB plan at £11.99, which works out at £0.60 per gigabyte.
Telenor Hungary (5G), Vodafone (5G). These are the commercial networks local customers use, not a separate visitor band, so your coverage is theirs. 5G is available where the network has deployed it and your handset supports it.
