Cheapest eSIM for Iceland: the Ring Road, the Highlands and the weather pages you need

Published 11 October 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: The cheapest eSIM for Iceland is £1.49 for 1 GB over 7 days. 6 plans run up to 20 GB at £13.99, and the best value per gigabyte is £0.70. All of them roam onto Nova and Síminn.

Iceland is the country on this list where mobile data is least of a convenience and most of a safety tool. Road closures, weather warnings and river-crossing conditions change fast, the official sources are online, and the places where you most need them are the places with no signal. That is the whole shape of the problem.

Covered where the road is, empty where it is not

The Ring Road is covered for most of its length, and the south coast between Reykjavík and Höfn — which is where the majority of first visits go — is reliable. Reykjavík, Akureyri and the towns are well served, and the Golden Circle is a non-issue.

The interior is a different country. The Highlands and the F-roads have no coverage at all, and this is not a matter of a weak signal or a slow connection — there is nothing there. Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, the Askja route, the Laugavegur trail: assume no signal for the duration and plan accordingly.

The Westfjords and the north-east are the in-between case. There is coverage in the villages and along parts of the road, with long gaps between, and the mountain passes are exactly where it goes.

Coverage in short: The Ring Road is covered for most of its length and the south coast is reliable. The Highlands, the F-roads and the interior have no coverage at all — that is the single most useful thing to know before an Iceland trip.

£1.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £13.99 is £0.70 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.

Roaming, and whether you need this at all

Iceland is not in the EU but it is in the EEA, which means EU and EEA SIMs do get roam-like-at-home here — this surprises people who assume Iceland works like Switzerland. It does not. UK, US, Canadian and Australian SIMs have no such protection and Icelandic roaming is expensive on a standard tariff.

The two websites that matter

Icelandic road conditions are published officially and updated constantly, as are the weather warnings, and in winter they change the plan rather than inform it — roads close, and the closure is not a suggestion. The safe-travel alert service is the other one worth knowing about before you go rather than after.

The practical pattern for an Iceland trip is to check conditions every time you have signal and a decision to make, because you cannot assume you will have signal at the next decision point. Download offline maps for the whole route, not just the day's leg. And if the plan involves the Highlands, treat the phone as a camera with a map on it rather than a connection.

The networks you actually connect to

In Iceland our plans roam onto Nova (5G), Síminn (5G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.

It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Iceland than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.

Before you buy

Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.

Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.

For how Iceland compares with the rest of what we sell, see what travel eSIMs actually cost, or how much data you actually need if the size is the part you are unsure about.

Frequently asked questions

No. The Highlands and the F-roads have no coverage — not a weak signal, none. Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk and the Laugavegur trail should be planned on the assumption that you are offline for the duration, with maps downloaded in advance.
Yes. Iceland is not in the EU but it is in the EEA, so EU and EEA SIMs get roam-like-at-home here. This is the opposite of Switzerland, which is in neither and is charged as a separate country everywhere.

Nova (5G), Síminn (5G). These are the commercial networks local customers use, not a separate visitor band, so your coverage is theirs. 5G is available where the network has deployed it and your handset supports it.
