Indonesia is the country on this list where you most need working data the moment you land, because the way you get from the airport to where you are staying is an app. Ride-hailing is the default in Indonesian cities and on Bali, and arranging it requires a connection before you have one.
Bali and Java are covered; the archipelago is not uniform
Bali has thorough coverage across the south — Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud, Sanur — and along the main roads to the east and north. Jakarta and the Javanese cities are dense. Lombok's west coast and the main towns are well served.
Beyond that it varies enormously. This is a country of thousands of islands and the networks are concentrated where the people are. The Gili islands have coverage but it is congested in season. Flores, Sumba, the interior of Sumatra and Kalimantan are thin, and the boat crossings between islands are frequently signal-free for the duration.
Komodo, the Banda islands and the remoter diving destinations should be treated as offline. That is also, for most people, part of the point of going.

£2.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £2.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £15.49 is £0.77 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.
Roaming, and whether you need this at all
Indonesia is nowhere near the EU roaming regime and standard international roaming here is expensive on every home network we are aware of. This is a destination where a travel eSIM is a straightforward saving rather than a marginal one.
Set it up before you land
The Indonesian arrival pattern is: clear immigration, open a ride-hailing app, order a car. Gojek and Grab are the dominant services and both need data to work. If your eSIM is not installed and active before you are standing outside the terminal, you are negotiating with a taxi desk instead — which is survivable but is the thing people specifically bought the eSIM to avoid.
Install the profile days before you fly. Validity starts when it first connects to an Indonesian network, so there is no cost to being ready early. Turn it on while the plane is still taxiing and it will have registered by the time you reach the hall.
One more: the arrival formalities for Indonesia have moved substantially online in recent years. Whatever the current requirement is when you travel, it is worth completing before you leave rather than in a queue on airport Wi-Fi.
The networks you actually connect to
In Indonesia our plans roam onto Smartfren (4G), Telkomsel (5G), XL (4G), Indosat (5G), PT Natrindo Telepon Seluler (4G), Fren/Hepi (4G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.
It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Indonesia than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.
Before you buy
Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.
Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.
