Malta is about 27 kilometres long. It is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, it is covered end to end, and the practical question for a visitor is not where the signal is but how little data a week there actually takes.

Malta, Gozo and Comino

Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Mdina and the whole of the main island are thoroughly covered by the two networks. There is no part of Malta that is meaningfully remote.

Gozo is included and well served — the ferry from Ċirkewwa is short enough that any gap mid-crossing is a matter of minutes, and Victoria and the Gozitan villages have proper coverage. Comino, which is essentially uninhabited outside the Blue Lagoon season, has usable signal from the surrounding masts.

The one honest caveat is congestion rather than coverage. In peak summer the Blue Lagoon and the St Julian's nightlife strip carry very heavy load, and speeds there can slow in the evening. That is a crowd problem and it affects local customers identically.

Coverage in short: Complete coverage — it is a small, dense archipelago. Gozo and Comino are included and well served.

£1.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £11.99 is £0.60 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.

Roaming, and whether you need this at all

Malta is in the EU, so EU and EEA SIMs roam at home rates. English is an official language alongside Maltese, which makes Malta one of the easier destinations for an English-speaking visitor to handle without leaning on translation data.

The bus app and the ferries

Malta's public transport is almost entirely buses, they are the normal way to get around without a car, and the route and timing information is online. That plus maps is most of what a Maltese trip needs.

The Gozo and Valletta ferries are the other recurring lookup. Both run frequently, and both are the sort of thing you check on the way rather than planning in advance — which works fine here because you will have a signal when you do it.

The networks you actually connect to

In Malta our plans roam onto Vodafone (5G), GO (5G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.

It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Malta than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.

Before you buy

Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.

Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.

Not much. The islands are tiny, English is an official language so translation is rarely needed, and most visitors use data for maps, bus times and messaging. The entry plan covers a short trip comfortably.
