Cheapest eSIM for Saudi Arabia: Makkah, Madinah and the Haramain line

Published 11 October 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: The cheapest eSIM for Saudi Arabia is £3.49 for 1 GB over 7 days. 6 plans run up to 20 GB at £26.49, and the best value per gigabyte is £1.32. All of them roam onto STC.

Most visits to Saudi Arabia are for Umrah or Hajj, and that gives the data question a very specific shape. You need to coordinate with a group, follow a schedule that changes, and stay in touch with family at home — in the single most congested mobile environment on earth during peak days.

The holy cities, the railway and the new destinations

Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh and Jeddah are well covered, and the Haramain high-speed railway between Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah holds a signal along most of the route.

The thing to understand about the holy sites is that the limiting factor is congestion rather than coverage. During peak Umrah seasons and especially during Hajj, the area around the Haram carries an extraordinary number of simultaneously connected phones, and everyone sees slower speeds — pilgrims on local SIMs included. This is load, not a fault with your plan, and no provider can sell you a way around it.

The newer tourist destinations — AlUla, the Red Sea coast, Diriyah — are covered around the developed sites. The open desert between them is not, and the distances in Saudi Arabia are very large.

Coverage in short: Riyadh, Jeddah and the holy cities are well covered, and the Haramain railway has signal along most of the route. During peak Hajj days every network around the holy sites carries extraordinary load and everyone sees slower speeds — congestion, not a fault.

£3.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £3.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £26.49 is £1.32 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.

Roaming, and whether you need this at all

Saudi Arabia is outside any European roaming arrangement, and standard roaming rates from a UK or EU tariff are high. One roaming partner is available to us here, which is the national network with the broadest footprint. We have a fuller guide to the practicalities at eSIMs for Umrah and Hajj.

Set it up before you travel, and share the details

Install and test the eSIM before you leave home. Pilgrim schedules are tight on arrival, the airports at peak season are busy, and standing in a hall trying to download a profile is the wrong moment to discover the handset is carrier-locked.

Two things that specifically help a group: make sure someone else in the party has your number on the travel eSIM, and agree a meeting point that does not depend on phones working. In the crowd around the Haram at peak times, messages are delayed and calls fail, and a physical fallback is worth more than any plan.

Battery is the other constraint. Long days, heat, and a phone hunting for a congested network drain a battery fast. A power bank is the accessory that matters most here.

The networks you actually connect to

In Saudi Arabia our plans roam onto STC (5G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.

It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Saudi Arabia than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.

Before you buy

Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.

Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.

Frequently asked questions

It will connect, but expect slow speeds at peak times. The area around the holy sites carries extraordinary load during Hajj and peak Umrah, and everyone — including pilgrims on local SIMs — sees congestion. No provider can sell a way around it, so agree a physical meeting point as a fallback.
Along most of the route, yes. The high-speed line between Makkah, Jeddah and Madinah holds a signal for the majority of the journey, which makes it a reasonable place to message family while travelling between the cities.

STC (5G). These are the commercial networks local customers use, not a separate visitor band, so your coverage is theirs. 5G is available where the network has deployed it and your handset supports it.
