Cheapest eSIM for Tunisia: the coast, Djerba and the desert south

Published 11 October 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: The cheapest eSIM for Tunisia is £1.99 for 1 GB over 7 days. 6 plans run up to 20 GB at £16.99, and the best value per gigabyte is £0.85. All of them roam onto OOREDOO TN.

Tunisia divides neatly for a phone. The northern coast, where almost all visitors spend almost all their time, is well covered. The south — the Sahara, the mountain oases, the film-set desert — is not, and the distances down there are long.

The coastal strip, then the south

Tunis, Sousse, Monastir, Hammamet and the coastal resorts are well covered, and the motorway along the coast holds a signal throughout. Djerba is well served, which matters because it is where a large share of visitors go.

Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and the archaeological sites within reach of Tunis are all fine. The interior toward Kairouan and Dougga is usable along the main roads.

South of Gabès the picture changes. The Sahara, the salt flats around Chott el Djerid, the mountain oases at Chebika and Tamerza, and the desert routes toward Douz and Ksar Ghilane are sparse to empty. Desert excursions should be planned offline and the operators running them know this.

Coverage in short: Tunis, Sousse and the coastal resorts are well covered. The Sahara and the mountain south are sparse.

Live prices in GBP, updated from our network partners. 6 plans currently available for Tunisia. Validity counts from the moment the eSIM first connects to a network in Tunisia, not from when you buy — so installing days before you fly costs you nothing.

£1.99 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.99 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £16.99 is £0.85 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.

Roaming, and whether you need this at all

Tunisia is outside any European roaming arrangement despite being a short flight from Europe, and standard roaming rates apply on every foreign tariff. One roaming partner network is available to us here, so the plan's coverage is that network's footprint.

Resort Wi-Fi is not a plan

A lot of Tunisian trips are resort-based and the assumption is that hotel Wi-Fi covers it. It usually does, in the room. It does not cover the taxi, the medina in Sousse, the drive to Kairouan or the day in Tunis — which are the moments you actually want a map and a translation app.

Given the plans below start at a couple of pounds, the calculation is not difficult. Install before you fly and the data is there for the parts of the trip that happen outside the hotel.

The networks you actually connect to

In Tunisia our plans roam onto OOREDOO TN (5G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.

It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in Tunisia than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.

Before you buy

Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.

Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.

Frequently asked questions

Very little. South of Gabès the network thins quickly, and the salt flats, mountain oases and desert routes toward Douz and Ksar Ghilane are sparse to empty. Desert excursions should be planned offline.
For the room, usually. It does not help in the taxi, in the Sousse medina, on the drive to Kairouan or during a day in Tunis — which are exactly the moments you want maps and translation. The plans here cost a couple of pounds, so it is rarely worth the compromise.
£1.99 for 1 GB over 7 days — the lowest of the 6 Tunisia plans we sell. The best value per gigabyte is the 20 GB plan at £16.99, which works out at £0.85 per gigabyte.
OOREDOO TN (5G). These are the commercial networks local customers use, not a separate visitor band, so your coverage is theirs. 5G is available where the network has deployed it and your handset supports it.
