Cheapest eSIM for the UK: what visitors need after Brexit
Short answer: The cheapest eSIM for United Kingdom is £1.49 for 1 GB over 7 days. 6 plans run up to 20 GB at £11.99, and the best value per gigabyte is £0.60. All of them roam onto EE and 3.

The UK left the EU, and with it the guarantee of roam-like-at-home for EU visitors. Several major British networks have reintroduced European roaming charges in some form, and the reverse is also true — an EU SIM arriving in Britain is no longer automatically covered. For visitors, that changed the arithmetic considerably.
Dense in the cities, genuinely patchy in between
London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow are densely covered, and the London Underground now has mobile coverage across a growing share of the network rather than only in stations.
What surprises visitors is how patchy rural Britain still is. The Scottish Highlands have large areas with nothing, mid-Wales is thin, and parts of Cornwall, Devon and the North York Moors have real gaps. The phrase used locally is "not-spots" and they are a long-running feature of British mobile coverage rather than a temporary problem.
Rural rail is the other common complaint. The East Coast and West Coast main lines are reasonable but far from unbroken, and cross-country and branch-line services lose signal regularly whichever network you are on. Anyone who has tried to work on a train between Bristol and Penzance knows the pattern.

£1.49 is the entry price rather than the best value. At £1.49 per gigabyte it is the most expensive data on the list; the 20 GB plan at £11.99 is £0.60 per gigabyte. If there is any realistic chance you will use more than 1 GB, the larger plan costs less than buying the small one twice.
Roaming, and whether you need this at all
Since Brexit, the EU roam-like-at-home regime no longer covers travel between the EU and the UK. EU visitors should check their own operator's current terms rather than assume, because practice varies considerably between networks and some do still include the UK voluntarily. Visitors from the US, Canada, Australia and the Gulf never had any such protection and standard roaming applies.
Contactless, and what you actually need data for
London transport runs on contactless payment, which works from a card or a phone wallet and does not require mobile data. That removes one common reason to need a connection on arrival.
What you do need data for is everything around it: live departure boards, which matter more in Britain than in most countries because services are frequently disrupted; mapping, because British street layouts are not on a grid; and ticketing for rail travel outside London, which is substantially app-based and where advance tickets are dramatically cheaper than buying at the station.
That last point is worth money. British rail fares bought on the day are often several times the advance fare for the same seat, and the booking happens on a phone.
The networks you actually connect to
In United Kingdom our plans roam onto EE (5G), 3 (4G). That is worth stating plainly because it is the thing that determines your experience: a travel eSIM does not have its own masts, so your signal is whatever those operators have built, and 5G is available where they have deployed it and your handset supports it.
It also means no provider can sell you better coverage in United Kingdom than the local networks have. Where there is a gap, it is a gap for everyone — local customers included.
Before you buy
Check the handset takes an eSIM and is not carrier-locked. Dial *#06# and look for an EID alongside the IMEI — no EID means no eSIM hardware whatever the model name suggests, and a locked phone will install the profile and then refuse to register. The device compatibility guide lists what works.
Then install before you fly, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi. Setup by brand: iPhone or Android. If it will not connect after you land, this works through the causes in order.
