The eSIM travel checklist: 10 things to do before departure

Save this checklist for the day before departure. Ten minutes of preparation can prevent the most common “why is my travel data not working?” problems at the airport.

Before you leave

1. Confirm your phone supports eSIM. 2. Check that it is sufficiently carrier-unlocked. 3. Buy coverage for the correct destination. 4. Read the validity and activation rules. 5. Install the eSIM while you have reliable Wi-Fi.

6. Label the travel line clearly. 7. Screenshot or save important setup instructions. 8. Download offline maps and booking details. 9. Know which SIM should be used for mobile data. 10. Save the support email somewhere accessible offline.

On arrival

Wait until the device can see a local network, then enable the travel eSIM and the settings required by the plan. If the phone does not register immediately, give it a moment, toggle airplane mode and restart if necessary.

Avoid accidental roaming charges

Do not assume your phone automatically picked the intended line for data. Check the mobile-data selection and the roaming settings on both your normal SIM and the travel eSIM. Your home carrier’s roaming terms still apply if its line uses data abroad.

Keep the eSIM installed until the trip is over

Avoid deleting the profile during troubleshooting unless you have confirmed it can be installed again. A restart and settings check are safer first steps.
